What is Bronze Camp?

Bronze camp is an opportunity for new and old members to gain their Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion which allows holders to become Life Savers on beaches throughout Australia.
During Bronze Camp participants learn a variety of surf, first aid, resuscitation & rescue skills.
How old do I have to be?
13 years old (by the day of the exam) to do your Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC).
Or 15 years old to do your Bronze Medallion.
Do I have to be able to do anything to participate in Bronze Camp?
To participate in Bronze Camp you need to complete a timed swim in a pool. For Bronze Medallion participants it is 400m in 9 minutes and for SRC participants it is 200m in 5 minutes.
Do I have to stay at the club during the camp or can I stay at home?
It is not a requirement to stay at the club but most Bronzies enjoy staying at the clubhouse. It’s a good chance to get to know other members of the club.
SRC’s are usually younger and have less contact hours then Bronzies. They are requested to stay at home unless there are other circumstances that make it more convenient for them to stay at the club. Please let me know when you sign up if you are an SRC and you need to stay at the club.
How much does Bronze Camp cost?
In the past, the cost of Bronze Camp was $220 + membership. For this cost participants get a club/patrol cap, training manual, bum bag with a whistle and oxygen mask, patrol uniform, insurance and use of club facilities. The cost of this years camp will be similar to previous years. The exact cost will be confirmed closer to the starting date, the costs may change from what is published here.

So when is Bronze Camp?
Bronze camp usually runs in the first full week of January.
The camp commences on the Sunday afternoon at the clubhouse. We start with a welcome from club officials, some get to know you games and the timed swim at the Wonthaggi pool. The camp runs though till the afternoon of the following Saturday, when candidates will sit their exam. A presentation BBQ (the Bronzelow) for candidates, friends and family is usually held on the Saturday evening following the exam. On the Sunday after the exam new Bronzies and SRC's are asked to participate in their first patrol with their instructors.
Life after Bronze Camp
Bronze Camp is just the beginning! Catch up with friends once a month on patrol, further your first aid skills, learn to be an IRB crew or driver, or a patrol captain by completing more awards.
As a parent, how can I help out?
Join as an associate member or sign up as a family. Come to the clubhouse on the first day of the camp to hear what will be happening for the week and how  you can help.
